I made the decision to firefight this summer (2015). This job has easily been one of the most rewarding. Aside from the amazing people I have worked with, and the grateful people I have served, I have learned many important life lessons. Firefighting is NOT easy. I have learned how to work hard. And I mean very hard. There is nothing easy about carrying 50 lbs on your back in 100 degree weather while digging a fire line next to extremely hot flames. Not only is this hard, but repeating the same thing for multiple 15 hour days is rough. This job would not be possible if it weren’t for the hard work I’ve learned. I have also learned the importance of keeping a good attitude in rough circumstances. Eating, sleeping, and working with the same people all day can be challenging, however positive attitude makes for positive work.
